Towns County, the 117th county formed in Georgia was created in 1856 from parts of Union and Rabun counties. It was named for George Washington Bonaparte Towns, who was the govenor of Georgia from 1847 to 1851.
No history of Towns County would be complete without an account of the town of Young Harris. First known as McTyeire, the village was home to a small college founded in the late nineteen hundreds by Artemas Lester, an itinerate Methodist preacher. In 1896, the name of the college was changed from the McTyeire Institute to Young Harris in honor of its main benefactor, an Athens judge named Young L. G. Harris. The town was also renamed Young Harris in the same year.
